As I sit here at work, restless because I have most of my tasks done... I wonder on what to write for today's journal post. I have already talked about my soccer career and the fate of all that. And then I talked about the awesome football team we call the Georgia Bulldawgs. And for some reason today I am just having major writer's block.
I know! I can talk about my recent, as in yesterday, decision on switching my majors. I have already completed the EMT Basic course here at OTC, and have tested to receive my certification. But ever since I was a little six year old girl, I have always wanted to be a teacher. I changed my mind my senior year because I always had this feeling I would change my mind, so I just went ahead and changed it.
So what does that mean? I am going to continue schooling to be an elementary teacher. I'll graduate from OTC and most likely go to MSU to get my graduate degree in Elementary Education. But while I am going through school, I will be a volunteer EMT/First Responder for a fire district around this area. Once I graduate and actually get a job as a teacher, I will still continue to be a volunteer EMT.
I think this is the best way to combine both dreams of mine. I enjoy helping people while also teaching little kids and just being around them in general. But if you guys have any ideas or input, any advice would be great!
Thank you!
Hey Megan,
ReplyDeleteI have a few thoughts I would like to give to you, since you asked. I think it is AWESOME that you are thinking of doing both. This opens up your opportunities tremendously My daughter graduated last year from Drury with an Elementary Education degree after only 31/2 years. She is a very determined girl. She had this advice for me, and I would like to pass it on to you. She said if she had to do it again, she would take the full 4 years and add in classes that she wanted to take, not just to get her degree, but some that she really enjoyed. I don't know if that helps you, but I made some decisions based on her experience. I have chosen to take an Ag class next semester, simply because I am fascinated with gardening and have so much to learn, even though it doesn't count at all toward the Education degree that I am pursuing. Both of your choices are amazing, and I would recommend that if they both appeal to you, then pursue them both. It will make you a more versatile person. It might take more work, but how great is it that you have two things to be passionate about.
Finally, I have a suggestion on a Blog Post. You and I both commented on Kristian Hansen's blog post "What to do without Electricity." I would enjoy reading some of things you would do. I find everyone's different thoughts on this to be fascinating. I hope some of this helps. Thanks for sharing with us.

Megan,
ReplyDeleteI hear of students switching majors all the time. I'm sure it's often done for the wrong reasons, such as the current major is too difficult or the new major would make more money. But if it's been a desire of yours since 6 years old to be a teacher, then I think it's great you're switching to a major you can be passionate about. I myself have 7 siblings (4 younger), as well as 6 niblings (lovely word for nieces and nephews). So I can relate (no pun intended) to your love of kids.
Also, it's an excellent choice to pursue the EMT route simultaneously. Being multi-disciplined like that can open up a lot more choices in the future. Best of luck!
It is very common to change majors for a student. It sounds cliche but follow your heart Megan. You will know what to do when the time comes. If anything, you will have a wider area to get a job in the end. I wish you the best of luck.
